Jon Robin Baitz’s new play Other Desert Cities will begin performances at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi Newhouse Theatre on December 16, with an official opening set for January 13, 2011, according to The New York Times. It will be directed by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello, who was formerly Baitz’s longtime partner.

The play, which was originally titled Love and Money, had been planned as a Broadway production, but a decision was made by the author to do the work Off-Broadway instead. The piece focuses on a former film matinee idol who has become an ambassador, his screenwriter wife, and novelist daughter.

As previously announced, Baitz is at work on another play based on the life of Hollywood producer Robert Evans. His other works are A Fair Country, The Substance of Fire, The Paris Letter, and Ten Unknowns.

Baitz created the television series Brothers & Sisters, and his TV credits include The West Wing, and Alias.
