John Wells to Direct Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County Film; Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts May Star

John Wells is set to the direct the film version of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony winning Broadway play August: Osage County, and playwright Tracy Letts will write the adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Reporter also says that Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts are in negotiations to play matriarch Violet Weston and her daughter, Barbara. No other news on possible casting has been announced.

The show, about a highly dysfunctional and volatile Oklahoma family, made its debut at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago in 2007 before transferring to Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The show eventually won five Tony Awards, including Best Play and Best Director of a Play for Anna D. Shapiro.
