John Glover, Rosemary Harris, Linda Lavin, Jan Maxwell, Lynn Redgrave, et al. Set for MTC’s 2009-2010 Season

Manhattan Theatre Club has announced five productions to be presented in its 2009-2010 season. A sixth production, to play the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, is still to be announced.

Doug Hughes will direct a Broadway production of George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber’s The Royal Family at the Friedman, beginning September 15, with an opening night set for October 8. The comedy follows a famous family of stage actors, and will star John Glover as Herbert Dean, Rosemary Harris as Fanny Cavendish, Jan Maxwell as Julie Cavendish, and Reg Rogers as Tony Cavendish.

Linda Lavin will star in the Broadway premiere of Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories, to be performed at the Friedman beginning April 6, 2010, with an opening on April 28. Lynne Meadow, the company’s artistic director, will direct the production. The two-character play chronicles the relationship between two female writers: Ruth Steiner (Lavin), a celebrated New York author with a dry wit and a distinguished career, and her bright-eyed young protégé. MTC originally presented the play Off-Broadway in 1997.

The company will also present the New York premiere of Margulies’ Time Stands Still, to be directed by Daniel Sullivan at the company’s Off-Broadway home at City Center, with previews beginning October 15 in anticipation of a November 3 opening. The play, which recently debuted at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse, concerns long-term couple James and Sarah, a journalist and a photographer who share a passion for documenting the realities of war. But when injuries force them to return home to New York, they confront the prospect of a more conventional life.

The company’s Stage I space at City Center will house Lynn Redgrave in her autobiographical solo show Nightingale, directed by Joseph Hardy (beginning February 11), and Polly Stenham’s acclaimed British drama That Face (beginning April 29).
