Joel de la Fuente, Juliana Francis-Kelly, and Sue Jean Kim will star in the world premiere of Chiori Miyagawa’s I Have Been to Hiroshima Mon Amour, to be presented at the Ohio Theatre, May 8-30. Jean Wagner will direct.

The play is the centerpiece of The Hiroshima Project, Voice & Vision and Crossing Jamaica Avenue’s four-week event re-examining the 1945 atomic attacks and aftermath. It revolves around two love stories: one, played out in memories, involves a Japanese man, who returns to Hiroshima after fighting in WWII, and a Japanese woman who dies instantly at the moment of detonation of the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. The other, involving the same man and a French actress, occurs in 1959 in “restored” Hiroshima.

The creative team will include Glenn Reed (set), Rick Martin (lighting), Hap Tivey (production design), Liz Prince (costumes), Hillary Spector (choreography), and Du Yun (original music).

Hiroshima Project events will also include a screening of White Light/Black Rain by Academy Award-winning director Steven Okazaki; the presentation of little-known plays by Japanese writers from the 1950s, public forums, and more.
