At a press conference to celebrate the release of the new 50th-anniversary Blu-Ray boxed set of The Nutty Professor, legendary actor/director Jerry Lewis revealed on June 5 that the long-awaited stage musical version of the film will hit Broadway this fall. "November," Lewis replied when asked about a timeline for the show, which features a score by the late Marvin Hamlisch and a book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes. The musical premiered, under Lewis' direction, in 2012 at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

That production starred Michael Andrew as the socially awkward Professor Julius Kelp and his alter ego, Buddy Love, along with Klea Blackhurst as Miss Lemon, Mark Jacoby as Dr. Warfield, Marissa McGowan as Stella Purdy, and Jamie Ross as Harrington Winslow. At the press conference, Lewis was tight-lipped about the forthcoming Broadway company, but happily posed for photos with Hamlisch's widow, Terre Blair Hamlisch.

After Hamlisch's death in 2012, Holmes told TheaterMania, "I can't tell you a date and I cannot tell you a theater, but what I can tell you is that it's the intention of all of us to move forward, and based on the kind of response we had from the audiences, we think that there is a bright future for The Nutty Professor."
