Jenny Allen, Claudia Shear Added to NYTW’s 2009-2010 Season

New York Theatre Workshop will present Jenny Allen’s solo play I Got Sick Then I Got Better for four Mondays in September and October, and Claudia Shear’s Restoration (starring the playwright) in Spring 2010.

I Got Sick, to be directed by James Lapine, is an account of Allen’s battle with ovarian cancer. Restoration — which was recently seen at La Jolla Playhouse and directed by Christopher Ashley — is about an art restorer who’s hired to work on Michelangelo’s “David.”

As previously announced, the season will kick off with Aftermath (September 1-October 4), written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, and directed by Blank. This new work by the award-winning creators of The Exonerated is based on interviews with Iraqis regarding the American invasion of Iraq in 2003.

In November, Tony Award winner Doug Hughes will direct The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, adapted by Rebecca Gilman from the novel by Carson McCullers. It follows the story of deaf John Singer and other outcasts in the South during the Great Depression. The piece is being presented as a co-production with The Acting Company.

In the spring of 2010, NYTW will co-produce Top Secret: The Battle for the Pentagon Papers with L.A. Theatre Works and Affinity Collaborative Theater. Written by Geoffrey Cowan and Leroy Aarons, and directed by John Rubinstein, the piece is based on interviews and documents acquired through the Freedom of Information Act, and is an inside look at The Washington Post‘s decision to publish the classified study documenting U.S. involvement in Vietnam.
