Jeffry Denman to Provide Musical Staging for Site-Specific Spoon River Project

Broadway veteran Jeffry Denman will provide musical staging for The Spoon River Project, Tom Andolora’s adaptation of Edgar Lee Masters’ The Spoon River Anthology, to be presented June 15-26 at Historic Green-Wood Cemetery. Andolora will direct the production, which will have musical staging by Jeffry Denman.

The piece centers on the residents of the Midwestern town of Spoon River, characters, who, in their death, divulge their secrets, their private thoughts, their regrets and the turmoil that filled their lives. The show features such period songs as “Shall We Gather at the River,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “In The Gloaming.”

Denman’s Broadway credits as a performer include Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, The Producers, and the 1995 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. In addition, he has served as choreographer on such Off-Broadway productions as Yank! and Naked Boys Singing, as well as various installments of Town Hall’s Broadway by the Year series.

For this site-specific production, theatergoers will be transported on Green-Wood’s trolley deep into the heart of the Cemetery, where the piece will be lit by the moonlight, torches and lanterns.

The company will feature actors Tabatha S. Skanes, Diamando Stratakos, Susan Cohen DeStefano, Carolyn McCandlish, Halina Newberry Grant, Tom Mahon, Ed Newman, Carl DeForrest Hendin, Andre Softeland, Mark Lanham and David Michael Kirby, along with musicians Angelica Olstad, Pearl Rhein and Emma Carleton.

The creative team will include Scott Orlesky (lighting design) and Michael Eisenberg (sound design).
