Jeff Talbott has won the inaugural Laurents / Hatcher Foundation Award for The Submission. The honor, named for Broadway director Arthur Laurents and his longtime partner, Tom Hatcher, provides $50,000 to the writer and $100,000 toward the production costs for mounting the recipient’s play.

The Submission, which explores the nature of cultural authenticity in authorship, will be produced next season at MCC Theater.

Talbott, an actor who has expanded his career into playwriting, has been a member of the companies of Sly Fox and Fortune’s Fool on Broadway. Among his other performing credits are Such Good Friends and a revival of Laurents’ Home of the Brave, Off-Broadway.

The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award is intended for emerging writers, and Talbott has written only a few plays and, as a playwright, still lacks an agent.
