James Marvel, Austin McCormick, Rebecca Taichman to Direct for Gotham Chamber Opera

Gotham Chamber Opera has announced details for its 2012-2013 season.

First up will be Gotham @LPR: Orientale (October 1 and 3), featuring Monteverdi’s Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, along with music by Rameau, Lully, Szymanowski, Delibes, Schumann, Bizet, John Hadfield, and traditional Armenian music. The program will be seen at (le) poisson rouge, and feature a baroque instrumental ensemble, the dancers of Company XIV, the flute-harp-percussion trio MAYA, Grant Herreid (theorbo and guitar) and Nina Stern (chalumeau and recorder). The cast will include Jennifer Rivera, Maeve Höglund, Michael Kelly, and Zachary Altman.

Next will be Eliogabalo (March 19-29), with music by Francesco Cavalli, and libretto by Aurelio Aureli. The piece is based on the life of the Roman emperor Heliogabalus. James Marvel will direct, with music direction by Grant Herreid. The show will be produced at The Box, and in cooperation with Randy Weiner. Christopher Ainslie will star in the title role, with the cast also featuring Micaëla Oesta, Susannah Biller, Maeve Höglund, Emily Righter, Daryl Freedman, Randall Scotting, John Easterlin, and Brandon Cedel.

In June 2013, at a venue to be announced, will direct Daniel Catán’s 1988 opera La hija de Rappaccini (Rappaccini’s Daughter), featuring a libretto by Ocatvio Paz, based on the short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
