Indie Rocker Joe Popp Provides Score for Musical Pericles in Tampa logo
It's the summer of Shakespeare meets indie rockers. Stew has underscored A Midsummer Night's Dream in CT, Hem provided the music for the Public's Twelfth Night in Central Park and now, Joe Popp (dogs on ice, The Hornrims), along with Hornrims bandmates Brian McCabe and Tylor Durand, takes on Shakespeare's Pericles, Prince of Tyre, August 6-23, a Jobsite Theater production set to play at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center.

Longtime Jobsite contributors Neil Gobioff and Shawn Paonessa have adapted Shakespeare's play and shifted the action to the U.S. today. In this new musical take on the Bard, Perry, "Prince of Tires," gets caught up in a web of intrigue, incest and the mafia as he tries to balance having a family while also running a "family." His exploits take him through New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts, while he dodges mob hits, lecherous carnies, multiple storms at sea, and losing his wife and daughter.

In addition to his work with the bands dogs on ice and The Hornrims, Popp has composed for theater, including a punk-rock version of Macbeth seen at Florida's American Stage in 1997.
