It has just been announced that Doug Wright has won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play I Am My Own Wife.

The current Broadway production of the one-actor play, starring Jefferson Mays, has been running at the Lyceum Theatre since December 8, having originally opened Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons on May 27, 2003. I Am My Own Wife tells the story of Wright’s interactions with the real-life German transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who survived both Nazis and fascists to become something of a celebrity in post-unification Germany.

David Finkle, in his review of the show for TheaterMania, wrote: “In I Am My Own Wife, Doug Wright has produced his own amazing record of an amazing life.”

The other finalists for this year’s Pulitzer were Theresa Rebeck and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros for Omnium Gatherum and Tracy Letts for Man from Nebraska.
