Hoffman, McDonagh, Weisz Win Academy Awards

Theater veterans Philip Seymour Hoffman, Martin McDonagh, and Rachel Weisz were among the winners at the 78th Annual Academy Awards, presented in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 5.

Hoffman, a two-time Tony Award nominee, was named Best Actor for his work as Truman Capote in Capote. McDonagh, the author of such plays as The Pillowman andThe Lieutenant of Insihmore (now playing in an Atlantic Theater Company production that will soon transer to Broadway), won Best Live Action Short Film for writing and directing Six Shooter. Weisz, who was seen on the New York stage in The Shape of Things, was named Best Supporting Actress for The Constant Gardener.

Among the other winners of major awards were Crash for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay; Brokeback Mountain for Best Director (Ang Lee) and Best Adapted Screenplay; Reese Witherspoon, Best Actress for Walk the Line; and George Clooney, Best Supporting Actor for Syriana.
