Harlem Summer Shakespeare to Offer Free Performances of Romeo and Juliet
Stella Heath and Jordan Bellow star in the production.
Harlem Summer Shakespeare will kick off its 10th season of free Shakespeare in Riverbank State Park with Romeo and Juliet on July 23. The production will continue through August 17, with an official opening set for July 24. Artistic Director Alexa Kelly will direct.
Romeo and Juliet's cast includes Stella Heath as Juliet, Jordan Bellow as Romeo, Thia Stephan as Lady Capulet, Marina Barry as Nurse, Michael Gilpin as Friar, Brian Richardson as Lord Capulet, Jonathan Hicks as Mercutio, Karim Sekou as Paris, Colleen McGloin as Benvolio, John L. Payne as Prince, James Ross as Balthasar, Ricardy Fabre as Gregory, Gregory Cioffi as Samson, Kim Rachelle Harris as Montague, and Israel Gutierrez as Tybalt.
The production features costume design by David Anthony Crowley with lighting design by Steve O'Shea, scenic design by Bob Miller, fight choreography by Joseph Pisapia, and sound design by Brian Richardson.
According to Kelly, Harlem Summer Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet "will be visually contemporary, whilst keeping Shakespeare's language intact." Presented like a Law and Order-style crime story, the production aims to bring Shakespeare to new audiences.
