Grammy Winners Toni Braxton and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds Will Join Broadway's After Midnight in March
They are the latest "Special Guest Stars" to be announced for the musical tribute to Duke Ellington's years at Harlem's Cotton Club.
Grammy Award winners Toni Braxton and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds will join the rotating roster of "Special Guest Star" vocalists in Broadway's After Midnight in 2014. With 16 Grammys between them, the pair will appear in the production at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre March 18-30, 2014, following in the footsteps of the previously announced Fantasia (October 18-February 9) and k.d. lang (February 11-March 9).
Braxton and Edmonds first collaborated on a duet for Braxton's 1992 debut album, Give U My Heart, which he cowrote and produced. Their first album of duets, titled Love, Marriage & Divorce, will be released December 3 on Motown Records. On Broadway, Braxton has been seen in Beauty and the Beast and Aida. Edmonds makes his Main Stem debut in the production.
With an official opening-night date set for November 3, After Midnight is directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle. It features musical stylings of the Jazz at Lincoln Center All-Stars under the artistic direction of Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. Jack Viertel has conceived the work, which looks back on Duke Ellington's years at Harlem's famed Cotton Club.
The production, which includes classic songs like "Stormy Weather," "I've Got the World on a String," "Black and Tan Fantasy," and more, has a creative team made up of John Lee Beatty as scenic designer, Isabel Toledo as costume designer, Howell Binkley as lighting designer, Peter Hylenski as sound designer, Charles G. LaPointe as hair and wig designer, and Daryl Waters as musical supervisor, arranger, and conductor.
