The full cast and creative team has been announced for Betty Shamieh’s The Black Eyed, which will play New York Theatre Workshop from July 17-August 19. The production, which will be directed by Sam Gold, will open officially on July 31.

The cast will include Aysan Celik, Lameece Issaq, Jeanine Serralles, and Emily Swallow. The creative team will feature Paul Steinberg (scenic design), Gabriel Berry (costume design), Jane Cox (lighting design), and Darron L West (sound design).

The play depicts four Arab women from across the ages — the Biblical Delilah, a modern suicide bomber, a victim of medieval Christian crusaders and a contemporary, secular Arab-American — who meet in the afterlife.

Shamieh is best known for her 2004 play Roar and her solo piece Chocolate in Heat. Her new play Territories will have its world premiere at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre later this season.
