Flashback Friday: Idina Menzel Was "The Life of" 2000's The Wild Party

Andrew Lippa’s musical is enjoying a City Center Encores! remount.

As Idina Menzel adds roles like Frozen's Elsa and If/Then's E-Liz-a-Beth to her resume, she's developing a reputation for playing no-nonsense types. But nearer the beginning of her career, Menzel's niche was at the other end of the spectrum. She made her name originating the character of Rent's bisexual performance artist Maureen Johnson in 1996 and in 2000, she played the high-spirited Kate in Andrew Lippa's The Wild Party off-Broadway.

Thanks to New York City Center's Encores! Off-Center, The Wild Party is returning to the New York stage for a limited run this week, with Joaquina Kalukango in the role of Kate. But if you want to see Menzel as "The Life of the Party," check out the video below.
