Fisher, Sewell, Turner, et al. Win Critics Circle Theatre Awards

The 18th Annual Critics Circle Theatre Awards were announced yesterday at a ceremony at the Prince of Wales Theater. Unlike other awards, there are no nominees announced in advance.

Tom Stoppard’s Rock ‘N’ Roll was named Best Play and Rufus Sewell took the award for Best Actor for his performance in that show. Caroline, or Change, written by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori, won the Peter Hepple Award for Best New Musical. Nina Raine was named Most Promising Playwright for Rabbit.

Kathleen Turner was named Best Actress for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
The Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer was shared by Sound of Music star Connie Fisher and Andrew Garfield, who appeared in three shows: Beautiful Thing, Burn/Chatroom/Citizenship, and The Overwhelming.

Tasmin Grieg received the John and Wendy Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance for Much Ado About Nothing. John Tiffany was named Best Director for Black Watch, and The Punchdrunk Faust Company got the award for Best Design.
