Fela! Broadway Cast Recording Now Available for Pre-Release Orders; Street Date Set for June 8

The original Broadway Cast Recording of Fela! is now available for pre-release order on the show’s website. As previously announced, the album’s street date for release is June 8.

Knitting Factory Records has recorded the album, which features Sahr Ngaujah as Fela singing with members of the band Antibalas. A version featuring Kevin Mambo, who alternates in the title role, will also be available for download and for sale at the theater.

The musical, performing at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, is presented by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award-winner Bill T. Jones with a book by Jim Lewis.

The show is about Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s controversial life as artist, political activist, and revolutionary musician. It features his rousing music performed live onstage by Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson. The production also features musical arrangements and additional music by Johnson and Jordan McLean.

In addition to Ngaujah and Mambo, the principal cast members also include Lillias White (Funmilayo) and Saycon Sengbloh (Sandra).
