Metropolitan Opera music director James Levine has withdrawn from conducting seven upcoming performances in order to undergo corrective back surgery.

Fabio Luisi will conduct the four performances of Tosca (April 14, 17, 20, and 24) and three performances of Lulu (May 8, 12, and 15) that Levine had been scheduled to conduct.

Luisi has conducted Metropolitan Opera performances of Hansel and Gretel, Le Nozze di Figaro, Elektrae, Don Carlo, Simon Boccanegra, Die Ägyptische Helena, and Turandot. He is currently chief conductor of the Vienna Symphony and artistic director of the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.
