Erin Davie and Shawn Fagan Set for Festival-Staged Reading of Romantic Tragedy Liliom
Noël and Company's festival honors the work of actress Eva Le Gallienne with an exhibition and cabaret preshow.
The drama follows a tragic romance between the tough and cocky carnival barker Liliom and the gentle servant girl Julie. After a tumultuous marriage, Julie discovers she is pregnant. In an attempt to support his unborn child, Liliom agrees to stage a robbery with a fellow criminal deviant, resulting in his death. Liliom is then sent to Purgatory where he must succeed in one good deed toward his daughter in order to enter heaven or be doomed to hell.
This reading of Liliom will be the second installment in Noël and Company's festival honoring the work of Eva Le Gallienne. Artistic Director Keith Merrill will direct and Anne Kaufman will produce the event with original music by Leenya Rideout.
Accompanying Davie as Julie and Fagan as Liliom are cast members Mairin Lee (The Heiress), Merwin Goldsmith (Ain't Broadway Grand), Nili Bassman (Curtains), Jessica Bates (Or), John P. Keller (The Violet Hour), and Marc Vietor (Company).
Preceding the show, cabaret stars Andrea Marcovicci and Steve Ross will perform a preshow Prelude with poetry by Richard Le Gallienne. The evening will also feature an exhibit provided by Kaufman and Helen Sheehy of treasures belonging to Eva Le Gallienne, who originated the role of Julie in the 1921 Broadway production of Liliom.
