Edward Hall to Direct All-Male Merchant of Venice at BAM in May

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) will present the U.S. premiere of Watermill Theatre and Propeller’s all-male staging of The Merchant of Venice in the Harvey Theater, May 5-16. Edward Hall will direct.

Hall’s award-winning company Propeller previously appeared at BAM with productions of The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The company’s adherence to the original men-only tradition onstage is meant to underscore Shakespeare’s intricate tanglings between the sexes.

The production will feature set design by Michael Pavelka and lighting design by Ben Ormerod. Following the May 7 performance, there will be an artist talk with members of Propeller.
