Diane Paulus, whose 2009 production of Hair earned that year's Tony for Best Revival of a Musical, will return to the show as director of NBC's upcoming live telecast. Hair Live! is set for broadcast on Sunday, May 19, 2019, in front of a live audience.

Paulus first staged Hair at the Public Theater's Delacorte Theater as part of the free Shakespeare in the Park series, before it transferred to Broadway. After closing at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in 2010, her production played a return engagement at the St. James Theatre in 2010. For the telecast, she will work with Alex Rudzinski, who will serve as live television director.

With book and lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, and music by Galt MacDermot, Hair features a score including musical numbers such as "Let the Sun Shine In," "Aquarius," "Hair," and "Good Morning Starshine."

The musical premiered at the Public Theater in 1967 and tells the story of a group of hopeful, free-spirited young people who advocate a lifestyle of pacifism and free love in a society riddled with intolerance and brutality during the Vietnam War.
