Cy Coleman Tribute to Be Held at Majestic Theatre on January 10

A tribute to the great Broadway composer Cy Coleman, who died suddenly of a heart attack on November 18 at age 75, will be held at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre on Monday, January 10, from noon to 2pm. The event is open to the public.

Coleman wrote the music for such shows as Wildcat, Little Me, Sweet Charity, Seesaw, I Love My Wife, On the Twentieth Century, Barnum, City of Angels, The Will Rogers Follies, and The Life. A revival of Sweet Charity, starring Christina Applegate, is scheduled to open on Broadway in April.

Throughout his career, Coleman worked with such lyricists as Dorothy Fields, Carolyn Leigh, and Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Aside from his musical theater scores, he wrote many stand-alone songs, some of which became pop hits — e.g., “Witchcraft,” “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “The Rules of the Road,” and “It Amazes Me.” Coleman was also known as a jazz composer and performer.

The January 10 tribute to Coleman is being organized by ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). Among those scheduled to participate are Bea Arthur, Tony Bennett, Marilyn Bergman, Jim Dale, A.E. Hotchner, Michele Lee, Chita Rivera, Neil Simon, Wendy Wasserstein, and Lillias White.
