At a time when state and local governments across the country are cutting the budgets of local arts agencies, the Santa Monica City Council has voted to give a $75,000 grant to the Santa Monica Playhouse.

The unanimous vote was a welcome gift to the theater, which has been in danger of closing down. The money will go toward helping the Playhouse reach its funding goal of $450,000, the amount needed for the 40-year old institution to finally purchase the downtown complex that it has been renting all these years.

Since December, friends and supporters of the Playhouse–the oldest continuously producing theater company in Santa Monica–have raised $40,000. The $75,000 grant from the city will push them closer to their goal but there is still much more money to raise and only a year to do it.
