Charles Weldon will direct The Negro Ensemble Company’s production of Cate Ryan’s The Picture Box, to begin performances at the Beckett Theatre on Theatre Row on January 11 with an official opening set for January 15.

The play centers on a black man from the deep South who comes to work at the home of a white family on Long Island, and in the process becomes the caretaker for the little girl who has been emotionally abandoned after her mother’s second marriage.

Weldon is artistic director of the company, and has appeared in such productions as A Soldier’s Play, The Great McDaddy, The Offering, The Brownsville Raid, and The River Niger.
