Cast Set for Kneehigh Theatre’s The Red Shoes at St. Ann’s Warehouse

Casting has been announced for Kneehigh Theatre’s production of The Red Shoes, to play St. Ann’s Warehouse, November 19-December 12. Emma Rice has adapted and will direct the production, based upon the Hans Christian Andersen tale.

At the production’s core is a haunting story about a girl who can’t resist her red shoes. They make her dance with delight and spin with possibilities. But what happens when temptation becomes obsession? When she can’t stop dancing? And when she can’t take them off? Whereas in most versions the protagonist–who, in Rice’s text, is named The Girl–is punished with servitude or death for following her passions, Rice gives her heroine the chance to battle for her life.

Patrycja Kujawska stars as The Girl, with the cast also including Giles King as Lady Lydia, Dave Mynne as The Old Lady/The Preachers Wife, Robert Luckay as The Soldier/The Shoemaker, and Mike Shepherd as The Preacher/The Angel/The Butcher.

The production features poetry by Anna Maria Murphy, with design by Bill Mitchell.

Kneehigh is currently represented on Broadway by Brief Encounter, which made its New York premiere at St. Ann’s, and is also directed by Rice.
