Beautiful Becomes the First New Musical of 2013-14 to Recoup
The Carole King musical is officially a hit.
Beautiful — The Carole King Musical has become the first new musical of the 2013-14 Broadway season to recoup its production costs. The biomusical, following the life and career of legendary singer and songwriter Carole King, has reached this financial landmark within 10 months of opening at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre.
Beautiful features a book by Douglas McGrath. The musical's songs are written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, including "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "One Fine Day," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and more. The principal company is led by 2014 Tony winner Jessie Mueller in the title role, along with Jake Epstein as Gerry Goffin, Anika Larsen as Cynthia Weil, and Jarrod Spector and Barry Mann.
"Beautiful has become a bona fide phenomenon," said producer Paul Blake, "and we couldn't be more pleased and proud."
The musical will launch an American national tour in September 2015 and will open at London's Aldwych Theatre on the West End this coming February.
