Broadway’s Proof to Close in January 2003
Another long-runner will soon be leaving us. On January 5, 2003, Proof will end its run at the Walter Kerr Theatre after 918 performances and 16 previews.
When it closes in January, Proof will be the longest running Broadway play in nearly 20 years; it is already the longest running play in the history of the Walter Kerr Theatre. The Pulitzer Prize-winner cleaned up in 2000 and 2001, winning Best Play honors from the Tonys, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League.
David Auburn’s play about Catherine — an enigmatic young woman facing the challenges of her brilliant mathematician father, an unexpected suitor, and a mysterious mathematical proof — first opened at Manhattan Theatre Club on May 23, 2000. Anne Heche received critical raves when she joined the cast of Proof this summer; she will continue playing the role of Catherine, which was originated by actress Mary-Louise Parker and later played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. The production also currently features Len Cariou, Stephen Kunken, and Kate Jennings Grant. Directed by Tony Award-winner Daniel Sullivan, Proof has sets by John Lee Beatty, costumes by Jess Goldstein, lighting by Pat Collins, and sound design and original music by John Gromada.
