Broadway's Proof to Close in January 2003
Another long-runner will soon be leaving us. On January 5, 2003, Proof will end its run at the Walter Kerr Theatre after 918 performances and 16 previews.
When it closes in January, Proof will be the longest running Broadway play in nearly 20 years; it is already the longest running play in the history of the Walter Kerr Theatre. The Pulitzer Prize-winner cleaned up in 2000 and 2001, winning Best Play honors from the Tonys, Drama Desk, Lucille Lortel, Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League.
David Auburn's play about Catherine -- an enigmatic young woman facing the challenges of her brilliant mathematician father, an unexpected suitor, and a mysterious mathematical proof -- first opened at Manhattan Theatre Club on May 23, 2000. Earning critical acclaim and a sold-out, extended run, the show soon transferred to Broadway. (Click here to read Melissa Rose Bernardo's TheaterMania review of the show with its original cast.)
