Broadway to Remember Producer Ashton Springer With a Dimming of the Marquee Lights
The life of Ashton Springer, one of Broadway’s first major African-American producers who helped shepherd to the Broadway stage works such as Athol Fugard’s A Lesson From Aloes and the Pulitzer Prize-winning No Place to Be Somebody, will be remembered by the Broadway community on July 24. In his honor, the lights of Broadway’s marquees will be dimmed for one minute at exactly 8pm on that day.
“A producer or co-producer of numerous Broadway shows in the 1970s and early ’80s, Ashton Springer produced plays and musicals by and about African-Americans that brought both black and white audiences to Broadway. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” said Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League.
