It has just been announced that the Broadway production of the musical Aida, with music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice, will end its run at the Palace Theatre on Sunday, September 5. At the time of its closing, the show will have played 1,852 regular performances.

The book of Aida was written by Linda Woolverton, Robert Falls, and David Henry Hwang, based on the classic Verdi opera of the same title. The show was directed by Robert Falls and choreographed by Wayne Cilento; it features scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley and lighting design by Natasha Katz. The current stars of the Broadway production are Deborah A. Cox, Will Chase, Lisa Brescia, and Micky Dolenz.

In his review of the show for TheaterMania, David Finkle wrote, “Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Elton John-Tim Rice Aida is how un-striking it is. Glaring and blaring, yes — but striking, no. Indeed, considered in the context of the continually evolving musical, [it] can be seen as another brick in the tomb of the tuner-as-spectacle.”
