The American Theatre Critics Association (ATCA) has announced that Bill Cain has won the Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award, for his work Nine Circles. The prize honors playwrights for the best scripts that premiered professionally outside New York City during 2010.

The prize, which carries a $25,000 cash award, was presented April 2 at Actors Theatre of Louisville during the Humana Festival of New American Plays.

Kathryn Grant’s The Good Counselor and David Bar Katz’s The History of Invulnerability each received citations of $7.500.

The other finalists were Rinne Groff’s Compulsion, Lisa D’Amour’s Detroit, and Emily Schwend’s Splinters.

Cain won the same award last year for Equivocation, which was eventually produced at Manhattan Theatre Club in New York.
