Rock supergroup Green Day, whose music is featured in the new musical American Idiot at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, was among the winners of MTV’s annual VMA Awards, honoring the best in music videos, which were held on September 13 in New York and aired live on MTV.

Russell Brand hosted the event, which featured special appearances by Madonna, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, and Janet Jackson.

Green Day’s 21 Guns video picked up three VMAs for Best Rock Video, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography. Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put on a Ring On It), was named Video of the Year, and picked up the Best Choreography and Best Editing Awards as well, while Lady Gaga won Best New Artist for Poker Face and Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction for Paparazzi.

Other winners included T.I for Best Male Video (Live Your Life), Taylor Swift for Best Female Video (You Belong to Me), Eminem for Best Hip Hop Video (We Made You), Britney Spears for Best Pop Video (Womanizer), Matt & Kim for Best Breakthrough Video (Lessons Learned), and Beastie Boys for Best Video That Should Have Won a Moonman (Sabotage).
