Bausch, Builders Association, Jones, van Hove, et al. Set for BAM 2008 Next Wave Festival

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) has announced the selections for its 2008 Next Wave Festival, which will run September 30-December 20. The festival comprises 18 dance, theater, nouveau cirque, music, and music-theater engagements, supplemented by BAMcinématek series, BAMcafé Live weekend music performances, artist talks, visual art, and
literary events.

Highlights will include Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance’s New York premiere of A Quarreling Pair (September 30-October 4); the U.S. premiere of Sunken Red (October 7-11), by Toneelhuis & ro Theaters, based on the story of Jeroen Brouwers’ childhood experience in a Japanese prison camp; Iceland’s Vesturport Theatre in a production of Buchner’s Woyzeck (October 15-18), directed by Gísli Örn Gardarsson, and featuring music from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis; composer/performer Daniel Bernard Roumain in a collaboration with playwright Daniel Beaty, Darwin’s Meditation for The People of Lincoln (October 29-November 1), an exploration of the relationship between Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin; France’s acclaimed Compagnie 111 in Les sept planches de la ruse (The Seven Boards of Skill) (November 5- 8), a physical theater piece inspired by the ancient Chinese game of tangram; Urban Bush Women and Senegal’s all-male Compagnie Jant-Bi in a joint presentation of Les écailles de la mémoire (The scales of memory) (November 19-22); The Builders Association in the New York premiere of Continuous City (November 18-22), a multimedia exploration of modern communication technology and its impact on human relationships; Ivo van Hove directing his company Toneelgroep Amsterdam in a U.S. premiere staging of John Cassavetes’ award-winning 1977 film, Opening Night (December 2-6); and Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal with the U.S. engagement of Bamboo Blues — an ode to the dance and culture of India (December 11-20).

There will also be additional performances by Bangarra Dance Theatre, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Rosas, Montreal’s La La La Human Steps, BAM’s second annual New Voices from Spain program, the postclassical string quartet ETHEL’s Truckstop, a celebration of the legacy of Brazil’s Samba Soul movement entitled Red Hot + Rio 2, Taiwan’s U Theatre, composer Douglas J. Cuomo and Music-Theatre Group, and composer Michael Gordon with Ridge Theater director Bob McGrath, filmmaker Bill Morrison, and visual artist Laurie Olinder.
