A.R. Gurney and Other Playwrights Will Premiere New Works in the Flea Theater’s Fall 2013 Season

The schedule will also feature new plays by Jonathan Caren and Mallery Avidon, among others.

A world premiere of a new play by legendary dramatist A.R. Gurney is among the highlights of the Flea Theater’s 2013 season. Gurney’s new coming-of-age tale, titled Family Furniture, will run November 12-December 22 under the direction of Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail (In the Heights). Gurney has seen a number of plays produced at the Flea in recent memory, including last season’s Heresy.

Additionally, the off-off-Broadway mainstay, located on White Street, will open its fall 2013 season with the New York premiere of Jonathan Caren’s The Recommendation, running August 23-September 22. The winner of the Craig Noel Outstanding New Play Award for last year’s debut production at the San Diego’s Old Globe, the work will be directed by Kel Haney and star the Flea’s resident acting company, The Bats.

Next up will be Sarah Flood in Salem Mass, a radical retelling of the events leading up to the Salem Witch Trials, starring the Bats and The Riot Group’s Adriano Shaplin. Directed by Rebecca Wright of Applied Mechanics, the play runs September 24-October 27.

The season will also include Mallery Avidon’s new satire, Mary-Kate Olsen is in Love, starring The Bats and directed by Kristen Seemal. The production will play November 1-December 8.
