Anna Nicole Smith Sings in the US Premiere of Anna Nicole the Opera
The new opera will be presented in a coproduction by New York City Opera and BAM.
New York City Opera and the Brooklyn Academy of Music are teaming up to present the U.S. premiere of the opera Anna Nicole, playing September 17-28 at BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House. Anna Nicole, which had its world premiere at London's Covent Garden, is composed by Mark-Anthony Turnage with a libretto by Richard Thomas.
Few true-life stories have been as perfect for an operatic adaptation as that of Playboy icon Anna Nicole Smith. The model's flamboyant life and tragic death create a touching story that the New York Times review of the opera's 2011 opening called "audacious and inexplicably poignant." Richard Jones (Titanic) will direct the New York production.
The cast will feature Sarah Joy Miller as Anna Nicole, as well as Mary Testa (Queen of the Mist), Rod Gilfry (South Pacific), Stephen Wallem (Pipe Dream), Christina Sajous (American Idiot), James Barbour (Jane Eyre), and Ben Davis (A Little Night Music), with Susan Bickley, Robert Brubaker, John Easterlin, and Joshua Jeremiah.
