Andy Griffith Dies at 86 logo
Two-time Tony Award nominee Andy Griffith has died in North Carolina at age 86, according to published reports.

Griffith only appeared twice on Broadway, in the 1955 play No Time for Sergeants, which earned him the Theatre World Award and his first Tony nomination, and also later appeared in the film version. He starred alongside Dolores Gray in the 1959 musical Destry Rides Again, which earned him a second Tony nomination.

Griffith first gained nationwide fame for his role in Elia Kazan's 1957 film A Face in the Crowd, and later was known for his work on numerous television series, notably The Steve Allen Show, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry R.F.D., and Matlock. He earned an Emmy Award nomination for his work in the telemovie Murder in Texas.

In addition, he won a Grammy Award for his 1997 album, I Love to Tell the Story: 25 Timeless Hymns.

He is survived by wife Cindi and his daughter Dixie
