American Idiot to End Broadway Run April 24; Billie Joe Armstrong to Return April 5

The Broadway production of the Green Day musical American Idiot, at the St. James Theatre, will end its run on April 24. At that time, it will have played 27 previews and 421 regular performances.

It has also been announced that Green Day frontman and the musical’s composer and co-author Billie Joe Armstrong will return to the role of St. Jimmy beginning April 5 and continue in the part of the final three weeks of the Broadway run. As previously reported, the first national tour of American Idiot will launch in the fall of 2011.

American Idiot, which follows a group of working-class characters, is directed by Michael Mayer, who co-wrote the musical’s book with Armstrong, and features orchestrations by Tom Kitt, and choreography by Steven Hoggett. The show has won the 2011 Grammy Award for “Best Musical Show Album,” two 2010 Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Award, among other honors.

The cast currently stars Van Hughes as Johnny, AFI’s lead singer Davey Havok as St. Jimmy, Stark Sands as Tunny, Justin Guarini as Will, Rebecca Naomi Jones as Whatsername, Libby Winters as The Extraordinary Girl and Jeanna de Waal as Heather, along with Krystina Alabado, Declan Bennett, Jennifer Bowles, Andrew Call, Gerard Canonico, Miguel Cervantes, P.J. Griffith, Brian Charles Johnson, Jason Kappus, Lorin Latarro, Omar Lopez-Cepero, Leslie McDonel, Chase Peacock, Wallace Smith, Ben Thompson, Alysha Umphress, Aspen Vincent, and Mikey Winslow.

The production features scenic design by Christine Jones, costume design by Andrea Lauer, lighting design by Kevin Adams, sound design by Brian Ronan, and video design by Darrel Maloney.
