Alfred Uhry to Pen Stage Adaptation of Marie Brenner’s Apples & Oranges for MTC

Manhattan Theatre Club has commissioned Tony, Oscar and Pulitzer Prize-winner Alfred Uhry to write a stage adaptation of Marie Brenner’s best-selling book, Apples & Oranges.

Brenner’s memoir is about her relationship with her dying brother. She is a liberal New Yorker, while he is a conservative apple grower living in Washington State. In a statement, Uhry says, “The subject of brother/sister relationships is rich and complex territory, and Ms. Brenner tells her very personal story with honesty and humor and compassion. It has the makings of wonderful theatre. I only hope I can do it justice.”

Uhry is best known for his play Driving Miss Daisy, which won the Pulitzer Prize, as well as the Academy Award for his screenplay adaptation. He also won Tonys for The Last Night of Ballyhoo, and the book to Parade, and received a Tony nomination for his book to The Robber Bridegroom. He was most recently represented on Broadway by LoveMusik, which earned him a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Book.
