Alexander Gemignani will take over the title role in the national tour of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical Sweeney Todd in Toronto and continue in the part until the end of December. Original star David Hess is on leave to recover from vocal strain and is scheduled to rejoin the tour in Miami on December 31. The role of Sweeney is currently being played by David Garry.

Gemignani played the role of the Beadle in the 2005 Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd, which provided the basis for the tour. His other Broadway credits include Avenue Q, Assassins, and Les Miserables, and he will co-star in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Sunday in the Park with George.

Directed by John Doyle, the national tour of Sweeney Todd stars Judy Kaye as Mrs. Lovett, John Arbo as Jonas Fogg, Benjamin Magnuson as Antony, Diana DiMarzio as the Beggar Woman, Lauren Molina as Johanna, Edmund Bagnell as Tobias, Keith Butterbaugh as Judge Turpin, Benjamin Eakeley as The Beadle, and Katrina Yaukey as Pirelli.
