Actor Paul Winfield Dies at 62

Actor Paul Winfield, an Oscar nominee for his performance in the 1972 film Sounder, died on Sunday, March 7 of a heart attack. He was 62.

The bulk of Winfield’s career was spent in film and television. His work in the latter medium netted him several Emmy nominations and he won the award in 1995 for a guest shot on Picket Fences.

The actor’s one Broadway credit was his performance in the Ron Milner play Checkmates, which also starred Ruby Dee and Denzel Washington. In addition, Winfield had a substantial regional theater resumé.

He is survived by his sister, Patricia Wilson.
