A Great Start!

Don’t let the winter blues get you down. Get up and get out to the many great cabarets and clubs around New York and across the country.

The city’s “big three” clubs are all back in business: Feinstein’s at the Loews Regency welcomes cabaret favorite Julie Reiburn (January 6), Hollywood legend Tony Martin (January 13-17), the fabulous Natalie Douglas (January 19), jazz singer Jane Monheit (January 20-February 7), and comedian Pat Cooper (January 26); The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel presents the wonderful Wesla Whitfield (January 2-3), jazz pianist-singer Daryl Sherman (January 4 and 11), and the super-sophisticated Steve Ross in a tribute to lyricist Alan Jay Lerner (January 7-30); while the swanky Café Carlyle offers opera singer Shawna Stone, with special guest Peter Asher (January 2-10), followed by Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole (January 20-31).

Joe’s Pub continues its something-for-everyone offerings with appearances by Lucy Wainwright Roche (January 2), Jackie Hoffman (January 5 and 12), Noche Flamenca (January 10), Gloria Deluxe (January 12), PAM ANN (January 15-19), Ellen Foley (January 21), Toshi Reagon (January 22-25), and Peter Cincotti (January 26).

The always exciting happenings at Birdland include award-winning actress and comedian Julie Halston (January 5); composer and lyricist Scott Alan celebrating the release of his latest CD offering, Keys: The Music of Scott Alan with special guests Lisa Brescia, Heidi Blickenstaff, Jenn Colella, Erin Davie, Hadley Fraser, Nikki M. James, Marcus Paul James, Kenita Miller, Lauren Thomas, Katie Thompson, Natalie Weiss and The Broadway Boys (January 12); singer Patrick DeGennaro with special guest Annie Golden (January 19); and singer-songwriter Jeremy Schonfeld (January 26).

The Metropolitan Room continues to bring in first-rate acts including Morgan Sills (January 6, 13, 20, and 27), Suzanne Carrico (January 7, 23 and 24), Eric Michael Gillett (January 9, 10, 12, 19, and 26), Catherine Russell (January 11), Tim Draxl (January 14and 16), Edd Clark, Marni Nixon, and Sarah Rice (January 18, 21, 22 and 24), Annie Dinnerman (January 25), and the amazing Michael Winther (January 28-29).

Meanwhile, over at the Triad, the hilarious Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words continues its star-studded Monday night run (January 5, 12, 19, and 26), while new offerings include The Housewives Cantata (January 7, 14, and 20) and the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players’ new revue I’ve Got a Little Twist (January 8, 11, 15, and 18).

Heading across the country, Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company‘s new Upstairs at the Calderwood series presents students from the world-renowned Berklee School of Music (January 22-31); The Colony Hotel’s Royal Room in Palm Beach, Florida delights audiences with singers John Davidson (January 2-5), Marilyn Maye (January 6-24), and Sylvia McNair (January 27-February 7); San Francisco’s Rrazz Room at the Hotel Nikko hosts Varla Jean Merman (January 7-17), Tony Martin (January 8-10), Tim Hockenberry (January 12, 19, and 31) and Franc D’Ambrosio (January 20-February 1); and the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills, California welcomes Ilene Graff (January 7), Eric Millegan (January 14), Steve Gideon (January 21), and Geoffrey Going (January 28).
