62nd Annual Tony Award Nominations Are Announced

Nominations have been announced for the 62nd Annual Tony Awards, which will be presented beginning at 8pm on Sunday, June 15 at Radio City Music Hall and aired live on CBS-TV, with Whoopi Goldberg as host.

Among the musical leaders are In the Heights with 13 nominations and Passing Strange with 7 nominations. The two are competing with Cry-Baby and Xanadu for Best Musical.

South Pacific received 11 nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. As expected its competition is Grease, Gypsy, and Sunday in the Park With George.

On the dramatic front, August: Osage County received 7 nominations, including Best Play. The other contenders are Rock n’ Roll, The Seafarer, and The 39 Steps.

A special award for Lifetime Achievement will be given to composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim, while another special Tony will be presented posthumously to orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett. Chicago Shakespeare Theatre won the Regional Theatre Tony.
