10 Broadway Holiday Gifts

TheaterMania’s guide to seasonal merchandise includes items from shows such as Mary Poppins, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Mamma Mia!, and Rock of Ages.

Looking for that perfect holiday present for the Broadway lover in your life? There are, of course, numerous original cast recordings, T-shirts, and books that you can get. But for something a little more unusual, try one of the following suggestions.

MARY POPPINS COLLECTIBLE DOLL
A practically perfect gift! This Mary Poppins doll is dressed in the character’s traditional full-length blue coat, with matching hat, carpet bag, and umbrella. Disney’s stage adaptation of the movie musical (based on the stories by P.L. Travers) continues to play Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre, and earlier this year launched a national tour.

BILLY ELLIOT CHARM BRACELET
Merchandise for Billy Elliot the Musical includes a metal charm bracelet, packaged in a red drawstring bag with the musical’s logo on it. The bracelet features three pairs of ballet slippers and three pairs of boxing gloves, riffing on an early scene in the Tony Award-winning musical, now at the Imperial Theatre, in which young Billy gives up boxing classes in favor of dance lessons. It also signifies the triple casting of the show’s title role.

NEXT TO NORMAL PILL BOX
This ironic item makes a terrific stocking stuffer for fans of Next to Normal, playing Broadway’s Booth Theatre. The show’s central character, Diana (portrayed by Tony Award winner Alice Ripley), has an early song in the show, “My Psychopharmacologist and I” that describes her reliance on prescription drugs to treat her depression.

JERSEY BOYS ONESIES
Broadway babies will be sure to love these100% cotton onesies featuring Four Seasons song titles from the hit musical Jersey Boys, now at the August Wilson Theatre. The pink one reads “Big Girls Don’t Cry” while the blue one says, “Walk Like a Man.”

WICKED GLITTER GLOBE
This snow globe features the witches Elphaba and Glinda in the climatic scene from the end of the Broadway musical Wicked, at the Gershwin Theatre. It includes a wind-up music box that plays a section of the song, “For Good.”

MAMMA MIA! SWEATPANTS
These comfy sweats flare out at the bottom, and are fitting for dancing queens and other fans of the musical Mamma Mia!, at the Winter Garden Theatre. Featuring hit songs by pop supergroup ABBA, the musical earlier this year became the 14th longest running Broadway show of all time.

ROCK OF AGES SHOT GLASS
For the hard rocker or hard drinker on your shopping list, why not take home a shot glass from the Broadway musical Rock of Ages, playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. One side of this blue-tinted glass has the musical’s logo on it, while the other features the popular lyric (from the Pat Benatar song), “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

SOUTH PACIFIC BEACH BALL
This may not seem all that seasonal in New York where the Broadway production of South Pacific continues its run at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beamont Theatre. But the Tony Award-winning musical revival recently started up its national tour in California, moving on to Dallas in December, and the even warmer climes of Florida in January.

HAIR BEAD NECKLACES
Hair co-creator Jim Rado has designed two love bead necklaces, featuring handmade pieces. The Tony-winning revival of the musical, currently at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, recently announced that the Broadway cast will be moving to London in the New Year to open the show on the West End.

IN THE HEIGHTS HOLIDAY ORNAMENT
Finally, several productions — including In the Heights at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre — sell ornaments. This one features the show’s logo printed on both sides. Wicked sells its own customized Oz ornament. Hang them on a Christmas tree, or just around the house.

Many of these items can be purchased at the theaters themselves, but for added convenience they’re also available online. If you order now, you’re sure to have it in time for the holidays!
