Carnegie Hall Will Present One-Night-Only Concert Production of Guys and Dolls

The classic Frank Loesser musical will be seen on April 3, 2014, directed by Jack O’Brien.

Carnegie Hall will celebrate the classic Frank Loesser, Jo Swerling, and Abe Burrows musical Guys and Dolls with a one-night-only concert production on April 3, 2014. The evening will be directed by Jack O’Brien and feature the Orchestra of St. Luke’s conducted by Rob Fisher. Casting will be announced in the future.

Inspired by the stories of New York journalist Damon Runyon, Guys and Dolls follows the romances of crapshooter Nathan Detroit and his long-suffering fiancée, Adelaide, as well as gambler Sky Masterson and missionary Sarah Brown. Loesser’s score includes the show tune classics “Luck Be a Lady,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”

The creative team will include Joshua Bergasse (choreographer), Wendall K. Harrington (video and projections), Alan Adelman (lighting design), and Nevin Steinberg (sound design).

The original 1950 Broadway production of Guys and Dolls starred Robert Alda, Sam Levene, Isabel Bigley, and Vivian Blaine. The show was notably revived in an all African-American production led by Robert Guillaume in 1976; in 1992, in a production featuring Nathan Lane, Faith Prince, Peter Gallagher, and Josie de Guzman; and in 2009, starring Oliver Platt, Lauren Graham, Craig Bierko, and Kate Jennings Grant. The classic 1955 film starred Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Vivian Blaine, and Jean Simmons.

Carnegie Hall has previously presented concerts of the musicals The Sound of Music, South Pacific, and Carousel, among others.
