Once Leads Winners of 2012 Tony Awards

Nina Arianda, Christian Borle, James Corden, Judy Kaye, Steve Kazee, Judith Light, Audra McDonald, and Michael McGrath win for their performances

The 2012 Tony Awards were presented at the Beacon Theater Sunday night. Neil Patrick Harris hosted the event, which was broadcast live on CBS.


Once won big taking home eight awards including Best Musical. Audra McDonald won her first Tony Award as a lead actress (her fifth in total) for her portrayal of Bess in The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which won Best Revival of a Musical. Eight-time Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken took home his first Tony Award for Newsies along with lyricist Jack Feldman.


Clybourne Park won for Best Play, while Peter and the Starcatcher swept the design awards, garnering five Tonys in total. Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won Best Revival of a Play and James Corden won Best Actor in a Play for his tour de force performance in One Man, Two Guvnors.


Producer Manny Azenberg received a lifetime achievement award and other special Tonys were given to actress Bernadette Peters, actor Hugh Jackman, and Actors’ Equity Association. The regional theatre award went to Washington D.C.’s Shakespeare Theatre Company.
