Betty Buckley, Hallie Foote, and Lois Smith will star in Signature Theatre Company’s upcoming world premiere production of Horton Foote’s The Old Friends, set to begin performances on August 20 on the Irene Diamond Stage in the Pershing Square Signature Center. The work replaces the previously announced Edward Albee’s Laying An Egg, which the organization will produce in a future season.

Frequent Foote collaborator Michael Wilson will helm the play, which concerns legacy, loyalty, and the meaning of happiness as Texas farming family matriarch Mamie Borden and some of her old friends await a visit from Mamie’s son and his wife, only to receive some alarming news. Signature has previously produced Foote’s dramas The Last of the Thorntons, The Trip to Bountiful, and The Orphans’ Home Cycle, among many others. The play will officially open on September 12, with full casting announced at a later date.

Additionally, the Signature’s 2013-2014 season of all premiere productions will include Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Appropriate, which finds an estranged family member sorting through a lifetime of mementos at their old plantation home, only to discover a surprise visitor and a gruesome relic of the past.
