Joe Mantello will direct the new musical Dogfight for Second Stage Theatre. The production will run at the company’s Tony Kiser Theatre this summer, with exact dates, casting, and complete creative team to be announced shortly.

With music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Peter Duchan, based on the movie of the same name, the show, set in 1963, centers on a group of three young Marines on the eve of their deployment to a small, but growing, conflict in Southeast Asia. Before they leave, the young men set out for a night of debauchery, partying, and maybe a little trouble, and find that an awkward and idealistic waitress who’s recruited as part of a cruel bet, provides a lesson in the power of compassion.

As a director, Mantello has won Tony Awards for his productions of Assassins and Take Me Out, and is currently represented on Broadway with Wicked and Other Desert Cities. As a performer he has received Tony award nominations for his work in The Normal Heart and Angels in America.
