Performances of Two River Theater's new version of William Shakespeare's Pericles begin this evening.

Two River Theater transports the first of the Bard's "romances" from Shakespearean times to a dive bar at the end of the world. In the grim environment, a group of barflies and musicians come together to recount the epic adventure, which explores love, loss, redemption, and miraculous resurrections. Alongside Shakespeare’s classic lines are more than 40 songs and continuous underscoring by an onstage band playing instruments ranging from the hammered dulcimer and toy piano to the steel drum.

The Shakespeare play is directed by David Schweizer and features a full score of original music and lyrics by Rinde Eckert and choreography by Dan Knechtges. The ensemble, all of whom will play multiple roles, features J. Clint Allen, Philippe Bowgen, Rinde Eckert, Ellen Harvey, Kevin Mambo, Nikki Massoud, and Mary Testa.

The creative team includes Caleb Wertenbaker (set design), Gabriel Berry (costume design), Christopher Akerlind (lighting design), Ryan Rumery (sound design), and Cookie Jordan (wig design).

Performances will run through May 8.
