Paper Mill Playhouse to Receive 2016 Regional Theater Tony Award

The New Jersey theater will be honored at the Broadway ceremony on June 12.

Millburn, New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse (Mark S. Hoebee, producing artistic director; Todd Schmidt, managing director) has been announced as the 2016 recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award. The award will be presented at the 2016 Tony Awards ceremony on Sunday, June 12 at the Beacon Theatre.

"Throughout its rich history, Paper Mill Playhouse has established itself as a foundational pre-Broadway venue for new productions and a welcoming home for world-class theatrical revivals," said Charlotte St. Martin, President of The Broadway League, and Heather Hitchens, President of the American Theatre Wing. "We are ecstatic to recognize their dynamic role in the tri-state area theater community and unwavering commitment to fostering future Broadway audiences."

Paper Mill Playhouse's most recent productions to transfer to Broadway stages include Disney's Newsies, Honeymoon in Vegas, and the upcoming Broadway mounting of The Bandstand. This past season also included the world premiere of A Bronx Tale, written by Chazz Palminteri, Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater, and directed by Robert De Niro. In addition to its productions, Paper Mill has launched award-winning access services and outreach initiatives as well as performer training programs that impact more than 35,000 students each year.

The nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards will be announced live on Tuesday, May 3, from the Diamond Horseshoe at The Paramount Hotel in New York City.
