Grove Entertainment, Barbara Whitman Productions, and Hazy Mills Productions have announced the development of a new play based on the life of the legendary performer Oscar Levant. The play will star Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Sean Hayes (Will & Grace, An Act of God). More details, including information regarding the creative team, will be announced at a later date.

Levant was known for his roles in films such as An American in Paris and The Band Wagon as well as for his virtuosic skills as a composer and concert pianist. A George Gershwin collaborator, he composed music for more than 20 films and wrote or cowrote notable songs including "Blame It on My Youth." When Gershwin died in 1937, Levant became one of the most accomplished interpreters of the Gershwin songbook.

Hayes, who has also worked as a composer and classical pianist in addition to his acting career, said in a statement, "I’ve been wanting to play Oscar Levant for over 10 years, and this partnership is a dream come true. I have a deep passion for this project and an enduring love for my dear, Oscar."

"Oscar Levant was a brilliant entertainer and a complex man," said Grove Entertainment producer Beth Williams. "Barbara and I are excited to have this opportunity to work with the equally brilliant Sean Hayes in bringing Mr. Levant to life again on the stage."
